Taxonomic studies of myxomycetes from Southern Nigeria: Genus Stemonitis.

Genus Stemonitis ROTH,
The general characteristics of members of this genus is briefly described as follows:
sporangia cylindrical, stalked, gregarious or densely clustered, rarely forming a pseudoaethalium; hypothalus membranous, usually well developed, often common to a cluster; stalk extending into the sporangium as a columella; capillitium arising from the entire length of the columella, branching repeatedly, the final branches united with a usually more or less persistent surface net developed under the peridium; peridium fugacious at maturity, leaving the spore mass enclosed by the surface net; spores black, fuscous, brown or ferruginous in mass, violaceous-brown to nearly colourless by transmitted light. In this study eight species are described. They are Stemonitis axifera (Bull.) Macbr., Stemonitis ellipsoidii Ejale sp. nov. Stemonitis Farrensis Lakhanpal & Mukerji, Stemonitis fusca Roth, Stemonitis nigrescens Rex. Stemonitis rossii Ejale sp. nov. Stemonitis smithii Macbr., and Stemonitis virginensis Rex, The species previously reported from Nigeria are Stemonitis axifera, S. flavogenita, S. fusca, S. pallida and S. splendens.
