Phylogeny of subtribe Agrimoniinae (Rosaceae).

To investigate phylogenetic relationships among genera and species in subtribe Agrimoniinae, four nucleotide markers (trnL-F, trnG-S, nrITS, and waxy) have been analyzed under diverse evolutionary assumptions. Agrimoniinae comprises one widely distributed genus, Agrimonia, occurring mainly in the Northern Hemisphere and four endemic genera: Aremonia (Europe), Leucosidea and Hagenia (Africa), and Spenceria (eastern Asia). All the endemic genera are also monotypic, and African endemic genera are either shrubs or trees whereas the other northern hemispheric genera are herbaceous. All the sequence data support that Agrimoniinae is monophyletic, and Spenceria is basal in the clade. Spenceria (2n=14, 2x) is considered to be a relict species, occurring in high altitudes in Bhutan and China. Two African endemic genera are closely related, and Hagenia is considered to be a more recent lineage because of apomorphies of pollen and pollination characters. In addition, the results suggest that Aremonia is derived from European Agrimonia (Agrimonia procera and/or A. repens). The close relationship between Agrimonia and Aremonia is also detected in seed coat characters. Only these two genera in the subtribe have papillate surfaces. In Agrimonia, North American tetraploidy species (e. g., A. microcarpa and A. parviflora) and an Asian tetraploid (A. coreana) form a strongly supported clade, and diverse levels of polyploids (4x, 6x, and 8x) of Asian, American, and European species are clustered, which suggests that dispersal events might have occurred in diverse time periods. Fruits with hooked bristles in Agrimonia also support allopatric speciations in the genus.
