Colloquium: The flora of Madagascar: research needs and research progress

Miller, James S. [1], Stevens, Hannah [2], Porter Morgan, Holly [3].

Systematics and Conservation Biology of Malagasy Boraginaceae.

Boraginaceae s.l. have never been treated in a comprehensive manner for Madagascar. In the process of preparing a treatment of Boraginaceae for the Flore de Madagascar et des Comores, it was determined that there are 9 genera and 51 species of Boraginaceae represented, and that 25 of the species were new to science. Specimen data were reviewed and those without geographic coordinates were retrospectively georeferenced. All species were mapped and Extent of Occurrence and Area of Occupancy calculated to provisionally assign those species at risk of extinction to IUCN threat categories. Model taxa such as this data set can be used to determine the effectiveness of the current protected areas system and to make recommendations for future priority areas for plant protection.
