Phylogenetic relationships among some Crocus taxa based on morphology and anatomy in Turkey.

In this study, 15 Crocus taxa were analyzed using 29 morphological and 4 anatomical characters. Analysis of data set utilizing maximum parsimony criterion with Branch-and-Bound search algorithm yielded 32 most parsimonious trees. Some of the branches obtained by Majority Rule consensus algorithm were supported by Bootstrap analysis. Our data mostly did not agree with the previous sectional and serial treatments. The most interesting result was the paraphyletic condition of C. pallasii which was previously included in the section Crocus that showed monophyly with Section Nudiscapus Series Reticulati in this work showing close relationship with C. cancellatus. Previously described sections Flavi and Reticulati did not show monophyly for their taxa based on our analysis. For example, C. gargaricus and C. cancellatus of the section Reticulati were not monophyletic based on our data set. Interestingly, C. gargaricus of section Reticulati showed monophyly with Sect. Nudiscapus series Biflori members. Sectional and serial treatment of C. fleischeri was consistent with our results. Our data suggests that more morphological data along with molecular data are needed for reliable conclusions on this genus.
