A phylogeny of the Cupressaceae based on the combined analysis of chloroplast and nuclear markers.

As part of the ongoing Gymnosperm AToL (Assembling the Tree of Life) project, a preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the Cupressaceae was conducted to provide the basic framework from which more detailed analyses of the family will continue. Parsimony analyses were performed using DNA sequence data from two chloroplast and one nuclear region (~5.6kB; trnK including matK, rbcL, and 18S). Representatives of all of the extant genera were included, in addition to a more thorough sampling from within each of the larger genera. Our results are congruent with previous molecular analyses (including subsets of these taxa and/or smaller data sets), which have shown that a monophyletic Cupressaceae includes all members of the previously recognized Taxodiaceae. Improved resolution and branch support are provided for some of the major clades within the family. Previously recognized subfamilial groupings are maintained, with the monogeneric Cunninghamia at the base of the phylogeny, sister to the remainder of the family.
