Systematic implication of floral micromorphology in Glechoma and related genera (Nepetinae-Lamiaceae).

The micromorphology of floral characters in Glechoma and representatives of five related genera (23 taxa: for corolla and calyx, 15 taxa: for nutlets) in Nepetinae was studied by LM and SEM in order to evaluate its systematic significance. The stomata of the calyx are hypostomatic or amphistomatic. The stomata of the corolla are absent in most taxa, except Meehania. The anomocytic and anisocytic, are common, but rarely anomocytic together with diacytic in some Agastache taxa. The size range of the guard cell is 16.9-38.6 ㎛ in length: the smallest stoma can be found in A. rugosa (16.9-19.8 ㎛), while Marmoritis complanatum has the largest (30.2-38.6 ㎛). Six trichome types are recognized: Three non-glandular trichomes (NGT): unicellular NGT, uniseriate NGT composing of two cells, and uniseriate NGT with three or even more cells; three glandular trichomes (GT): clavate GT with unicellular head, clavate GT with multicellular head, subsessile GT with multicellular head. The clavate GT with multicellular head is occurred in most of taxa, except Agastache. The types of trichomes and their distribution are very variable. Shapes of nutlet are ovoid to ellipsoid, and the size varies from 1.36-3.83 x 0.82-2.65 mm. The largest nutlet on average can be found in Meehania urticifolia (3.32 × 2.31 ㎜), whereas A. nepetoides has the smallest one (1.43 × 0.88 ㎜). The surface ornamentations are basically reticulate. The shapes of cell are considerably variable. Two kinds of trichomes were found on nutlets: unicellular NGT (only in Agastache) and subsessile GT (in Glechoma and Meehania). Myxocarpy is only found in Glechoma, which can be an autapomorphic character. In order to evaluate the phylogenetic relationship between Glechoma and related taxa in Nepetinae, the obtained floral micromorphological characters are mapped on the preliminary molecular phylogenetic tree based on the ITS sequence data, and discussed.
