Phylogeny of the genus Acacia in the New World, with emphasis in the swollen-thorn acacias.

A phylogenetic analysis done with some species of neotropical acacias, in particular with swollen-thorn acacias is presented. We used nuclear (ITS and PEPC) and chloroplast (matK, trnL-trnF and psaB-rps14) markers. In general, the information obtained with ITS and matK showed that the myrmecophytic group is monophyletic, contrary to the analysis with PEPC, trnL-trnF and psaB-rps14. In all cases, the myrmecophytic acacias are related to A. macracantha group. Besides, with exception of the trnL-trnF phylogeny, the species of the Acacia subgenus are monophyletic, while the species of the subgenus Aculeiferum and Phyllodineae are grouped with the tribe Ingeae. Finally, this analysis suggests that species of the Acaciella genus are not monophyletic.
