Influence of Cytokinin and Manure Application in the Regulation of Onset and Duration of Senescence in Photoperiod sensitive Cowpea Varieties.

The influence of cytokinin and farmyard manure on the onset and duration of senescence in relation to yield in two photoperiod sensitive cowpea varieties was investigated. The cowpea varieties used were Kanannado(local) and IT89KD-288(improved). The treatments comprised of foliar applicatons of 50ppm cytokinin and 15%coconut milk in 3 doses. The farmyard manure treatment was applied as a single dose at planting and as a double dose, at planting and at flower bud initiation stages. Flower bud initiation, flowering and pod maturity were earlier in the manure treatments and later in the cytokinin treated plants. Senescence commenced and progressed more rapidly in the manure treatments and the control while coconut milk followed by cytokinin delayed the process. Despite the fact that total senescence occurred earlier in the manure treated plants both fodder and grain yield were significantly greater. The study suggests that manure has potential to increase yield in photopriod sensitve cowpeas grown with irrigation in the dry season..
