The contribution to vegetation of Qom Province as ecotone ecosystem in the center of Iran.

Qom Province is situated in the south of Tehran and at 50◦ 08´ to 52◦ 08´ East longitude and 34◦ 08´ to 35◦ 09´ North altitude. Qom belongs to the Irano-Turanian region. The climatological stations show arid conditions in Qom. This study was conducted at elevations of between 700m (Massileh Kevir) and 3200m (in Takht-e-Peimal (moutanous region) in the South. Due to ecotonical conditions (the connection between the Zagros mountain ecosystem in the West and South of the province and the central desert ecosystem in the east of the province) ecosystem and habitat diversity is high in Qom. Transitional zones or ecotones, between biomes are predicted to be areas particularly sensitive to directional changes in climate and vegetation studies represent pioneering researches in these cases. We have studied the Plant habitats and vegetation of Qom province in order to assess the environmental management. Vegetation sampling carried out in different zones by the plot sampling. The dominant species for plant formations was recorded on 50 randomly selected plots. Observation points (plots) were geographically positioned and assessed for vegetation. The plant species were identified according to regional and national Flora. The IRS satellite was provided data base for this study. Circumference of formations was measured by GPS. Delineation of map units was digitized and stored on Idrisi 32 (GIS software) for future analysis. Five plant habitats were identified in this area, that include: Alpine, desert, saline, wetlands and ruder. Moreover we provided vegetation mapping of this province and five map units were distinguished: dwarf scrub, thorny-cushion, anthropogenic, saline flats and bare lands. Moreover coverage-abundance were including low, moderate, relatively high and least. This study provides a basic assessment for the management and conservation of these habitats. Key words : Qom, vegetation, ecotone, Iran
