President's Symposia - Understanding the Crisis in Science Literacy: The BSA is Planting Science in the 21st Century

Nisbet, Matthew C. [1].

The Multiple Meanings of Public Understanding: Why Definitions Matter to the Communication of Science.

Despite the common and ubiquitous usage in science circles, what does everyone actually mean when they use the phrases "public understanding of science" and "science literacy"? In this presentation, Nisbet reviews how social scientists have studied the public understanding of science over the past 25 years. As researchers have approached the subject using differing conceptualizations, measures, and methods, important implications have emerged relative to communication strategies as well as the goals for public outreach.
